Driving Experience

I am passionate about fishing, and I’ve been wanting to get my jon boat for quite some time. When my best friend Mateo bought a jon boat and invited me to go hunting with him, I thought it was fantastic. After careful consideration and comparison, I decided to purchase a Lowe L1852MT AURA.

Shortly after getting it, I made plans with Mateo and another good friend, Noah, to go fishing together at the Grand Glaize Arm of Lake of the Ozarks. During our first outing, I discovered that this boat is not only lightweight but also equipped with a handle at the stern, making it easy for us to launch it into the water from the trailer.

I opted for the Mossy Oak Breakup color for the boat’s paint. It blends well with the surrounding environment on the water, and I don’t have to worry about it affecting the fish in the water. Today, I took on the role of captain. I sat at the right side of the stern’s console, but there was still plenty of space on the boat. Mateo sat next to me, chatting away, while Noah occupied the center of the boat. The speed of this boat isn’t fast, allowing him to stand steadily and enjoy the scenery on the lake.

Although its console is simple, it is sufficient for driving equipment. However, I believe I would like this boat even more if it had a tinted windshield installed in front of the console. But hey, with my sunglasses on, enjoying the sunshine, and breeze, it’s just so comfortable.

Riding Experience

We were on the upper end of the Grand Glaize arm of the lake. It was not yet March, and a large number of bass had come here before spawning. Noah could see schools of fish constantly swimming beneath the boat and couldn’t wait to catch them all. Seeing his excitement, I quickly found a suitable spot and gently stopped the boat, preparing to begin today’s activities.

I walked to the bow of the boat and opened the hidden storage area, which was filled with the live bait and fishing hooks we needed. However, this boat didn’t settle for just one storage area. There was another larger storage compartment located at the front of the boat’s center. I placed our supplies and lunch inside to keep them separate from the bait, preventing any mess. Mateo was very pleased with the fishing chair at the bow because his boat didn’t have comfortable fishing chairs. He had complained about it multiple times. Naturally, I accommodated his needs and gave him the bow position.

Noah and I chose to stand on the port and starboard sides of the boat, respectively. Despite being lightweight, the boat was incredibly stable. As long as we made sure not to stand on the same side, even with constant movement, it wouldn’t tip over. I cast my sidearm out, and as I pulled the bait back, it was a perfect setup! It didn’t take long before a fish took the bait! It was lively, and I put in a lot of effort to reel it in—a nearly 3-pound bass. What a great start! It seemed like today would be a fruitful day.

Specification

The Lowe L1852MT AURA, as a fishing jon boat, may not have a wide range of features, but its price matches its performance and is well worth it. It can practically blend into the water, becoming your fishing companion. Ample storage and seating areas are crucial for outdoor activities as well.

Other Versions

To broaden your options, we have also brought in the Lowe L1852MT JON from the same series, hoping it will be helpful to you.

Lowe L1852MT JON

If your budget isn’t as ample, or if you simply want a sturdy fishing boat without all the frills, then the Lowe L1852MT JON is a better fit for you.

It doesn’t have as many convenient features as the Lowe L1852MT AURA, but it provides more seating for the crew. A large portion of the boat is dedicated to the seating area, with three full-width benches that comfortably accommodate six people. While it lacks dedicated storage compartments, the pricing includes a trailer, which is hard to resist.

You don’t have to worry about the boat being flimsy just because it’s affordable. As a Lowe fishing boat, it goes through rigorous testing. The Mod-V design at the bow, along with the flat bottom at the transom, ensures excellent performance and stability in the water. The flat floor also provides a stable platform.

Of course, if your budget is even lower, you might consider the Horizon Treader jon boat available on the NeoBoats website, which has a layout, appearance, and features similar to the Lowe L1852MT AURA.

What we like about it

  • Made of durable marine-grade aluminum, the boat is not only sturdy but also lightweight.
  • The storage areas on the boat are ample and cleverly concealed.
  • The fishing chair at the bow allows for an enjoyable fishing experience on the water.
  • The spacious area in the boat can accommodate several people fishing together.
  • A long raised seat beside the console allows the captain to have a companion or family member sitting beside them, avoiding boredom.
  • The boat’s stern features a convenient handle, making it easy to launch.

What we don’t like about it

  • Limited comfortable seating; with maximum capacity, some individuals may need to stand.
  • It would be perfect if a tinted windshield were installed in front of the console.

FAQ

1. What is the use of Jon boat?

A Jon boat is typically designed for small lakes, rivers, or other calm waters. Its flat-bottomed hull is well-suited for shallow water navigation, making it popular for hunting and fishing. Its compact size allows it to navigate shallow waters, marshes, or reed beds to reach the ideal fishing spots.

2. What are the disadvantages of Jon’s boat?

Disadvantages of Jon boats include their unsuitability for rough waters. They don’t provide the same level of comfort as luxurious custom boats, with their benches usually lacking significant padding. They also don’t offer high-speed performance. Due to their smaller hull size, they have limitations on the size of the motor they can accommodate.

3. How stable is a Jon boat?

Jon boats are generally stable during navigation due to their flat-bottomed hull. However, it’s essential to ensure that the weight on the boat is evenly distributed to prevent imbalance and potential tipping. Additionally, they should be used in calm waters rather than rough and choppy conditions.

Lowe L1852MT AURA vs Tracker Grizzly 1860 CC

If you have a generous budget, the Tracker Grizzly 1860 CC offers a more comfortable experience on the water compared to the Lowe L1852MT AURA.

The Grizzly 1860 CC breaks the traditional notion of a basic jon boat and provides both durability and abundant features. As a driver, you can enjoy smooth and responsive steering with the motion steering wheel equipped with the BayStar hydraulic steering system. The molded console with a windshield allows you to experience the joy of boating from the optimal position within the boat.

As a crew member, whether you’re seated on the padded bench at the stern or in the center, or if you have your fishing rod secured in the vertical rod holders within the boat, you’ll appreciate the convenience and comfort. The livewell in front of the console ensures that your catch stays fresh throughout the day.

This boat maximizes the utilization of every available space. The bow deck can be securely locked for storage, the sides of the boat feature rod holders, and the stern provides ample seating areas. Apart from being slightly expensive, it’s safe to say that this boat has almost no disadvantages.

Lowe L1852MT AURA vs XPress 1756 VJ

The XPress 1756 VJ has a smaller capacity compared to the Lowe L1852MT AURA. Although its hull length is similar to the L1852MT AURA, most of its hull is occupied by the raised decks at the stern and bow.

In comparison to the L1852MT AURA, the XPress 1756 VJ offers more versatility. Its console and seats are customizable, allowing you to freely choose their placement according to your preference.

The boat provides multiple mounting brackets throughout, allowing you to install seats anywhere you desire and decide whether to add soft cushioning to the seats. Its “Mod V” hull design also enables smooth navigation on the water.

However, if you’re a consumer who doesn’t have specific preferences and wants to get the boat quickly for your outings, I still recommend choosing the Lowe L1852MT AURA. It comes with decent configurations, and customization may increase your expenses.

Lowe L1852MT AURA vs SeaArk MV 1860

The SeaArk MV 1860, compared to the Lowe L1852MT AURA, has a sturdier hull. Its hull is constructed with 5052 aluminum, making it not only robust but also highly corrosion-resistant.

It features oversized ribs and rib doublers, as well as a 3/16″ extruded keel, which makes docking easier even on rough waters.

Although it also comes in a customized mode, its rear seats are thoughtfully padded with foam, providing comfort during your outings.

If you prioritize the material of the hull, this boat will not disappoint you. Its hull is built to last for many years.

Summary

Most boats produced by Lowe are remarkable, and the Lowe L1852MT AURA is worth considering. Compared to many other jon boats with basic performance, I believe the storage functionality is crucial, especially when you spend almost a whole day on the water. You will also appreciate the importance of the fishing chair at the bow when your legs become tired from standing on the boat for too long.
